Big Owl Pillow Pet – Big Brother

I first made this pillow pet a few months ago, because I had some leftover Bernat Blanket yarn. I had this idea of making my daughter a pillow pet, rather flat and plain on one side, but with a face on the other. And for some reason, the first thing to pop in my head was an owl.

I don’t ordinarily like owls that much, but I absolutely fell in love with this one, and so did my daughter! She lays her head on her owl pillow and watches her movies on the couch, and she’s quiet… some of the time! 😂

In working on this pillow pet, I made the small pieces first, and sewed them to the main body before the final round.  This made it easier for me to sew all the pieces on (which is the part I least look forward to, btw!), but you’re welcome to sew them on after stuffing the main body, if that’s your preference!

So, without further ado, here’s the Big Owl Pillow Pet – Big Brother:

9mm Hook (4mm for the beak and eyes)

Bernat Blanket Yarn – under 200 yards of Main Color

Less than 50 yards of Bernat Blanket yarn in white for the eyes and wings (can do wings in any contrasting color if desired)

Small amount of yellow #4 yarn OR a 1-inch yellow triangle button for the beak

Small amount of black #4 yarn OR 2 black 1-inch buttons for the eyes

Polyfil

Eyes (make two), in Bernat Blanket yarn in white, using 9mm hook:

Round 1: Magic Circle. Ch1, 6sc. Sl st to first sc. (6sc)

Round 2: 2sc in each st around. Sl st to first sc.  (12sc)

Round 3: (Sc, 2sc in the next st) around. Sl st to first sc. (18sc)

Round 4: (Sc in next two sts, 2sc in the next st) around. Sl st to first sc. (24sc)

Round 5: Sl st in the back loop of each st. FO, leaving a long tail.

Sew onto front of owl, so they just touch one another, and the top rim of the eye is over round 26/27.

Using black #4 yarn, attach a black button at the center of each eye.

If not using buttons, with #4 black yarn and a #4 hook, do 12dc in a Magic Circle, sl st to first dc, and FO. Sew onto center of white.

Wings (make two), in white Bernat Blanket yarn OR a contrasting color to main body color, using 9mm hook:

You will NOT be slip stitching the beginning and end of each round together. Instead you will be turning after each round of the wings.

Round 1: Magic Circle. Ch3 (counts as dc), 11 dc. Do NOT sl st. (12dc)

Round 2: Ch3 (counts as dc), turn, dc in same st. 2dc in ea st around. Do NOT sl st. (24dc)

Round 3: Ch3 (counts as dc), turn, (2dc in next st, sc in next st) around. 2dc in last st. (36dc)

FO, leaving a long tail. Use the tail to sew onto the sides of the owl, so that the first and last dc of each round is attached to the owl at round 18.

Beak, using 4mm hook and yellow #4 yarn:

Row 1: Ch7. Sc in the second ch from the hook and across. (6sc)

Row 2: Ch1. Turn. Sc in next two sts. Sc2tog. Sc in next 2 sts. (5sc)

Row 3: Ch1. Turn. Sc in next st. Sc2tog. Sc in next 2 sts. (4sc)

Row 4: Ch1. Turn. Sc in next st. Sc2tog. Sc in last st. (3sc)

Row 5: Ch1. Turn. Sc in next st. Sc2tog. (2sc)

Row 6: Ch1. Turn. Sc2tog. (1sc)

FO, leaving long tail. Sew between the eyes.

Main body, in Bernat Blanket yarn in Main Color, using 9mm hook:

You will be working in rounds, without slip stitching at the end of each round. Instead, put a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round, so you always find your way back to the beginning!

Round 1: Magic Circle. Ch1, 6sc (6sc)

Round 2: 2sc in each st around (12sc)

Round 3: (Sc, 2sc in the next st) around (18sc)

Round 4: (Sc in next two sts, 2sc in the next st) around (24sc)

Round 5: (Sc in next three sts, 2sc in the next st) around (30sc)

Round 6: (Sc in next four sts, 2sc in the next st) around (36sc)

Round 7: (Sc in next five sts, 2sc in the next st) around (42sc)

Round 8: (Sc in next six sts, 2sc in the next st) around (48sc)

Round 9: (Sc in next seven sts, 2sc in the next st) around (54sc)

Round 10: (Sc in next eight sts, 2sc in the next st) around (60sc)

Rounds 11-28: Sc in ea st around. Sl st to first sc of the round at the end of Round 28. (60sc)

Round 29: Flatten and fold in half. Sc across, crocheting through the sc’s of both sides. Before your last 5sc’s, stuff the body to desired firmness. Finish the round. (30sc).

FO, weave in end.

Cut 8 pieces of 10-inch long blanket yarn in the wing color.  Put 4 pieces through the top of the first sc of Round 29, and knot them together. Repeat in the top of the last sc of Round 29.
