Well, it’s that time of year again, which means quick and easy stocking stuffer patterns! This week it’s my Bandless Ear Caps! This was such a fun little pattern to write up. Just needed a couple (unstretched) hair elastics and some scrap yarn, and you’re off to the races! These quick little ear caps work up in no time, and there’s both Worsted Weight and a Bulky yarn options, for all your scrap yarn needs!
The idea for these ear caps came from a Facebook request, and when I realized I couldn’t find any free patterns, I just knew I had to make one! They’re super simple, and a great beginner pattern for someone just starting out!
Supplies
2 unstretched Hair Elastics
Scrap #4 yarn and 4mm hook
Scrap #5 yarn and 6.5mm hook
Use WOOL if felting!
Stitches:
Ch: chain
Dc: double crochet
Dc2tog: double crochet two together
Hdc: half double crochet
Hdc2tog: half double crochet two together
Sl st: slip stitch
FO: finish off
For #4 yarn:
Secure yarn to hair elastic using a simple knot. Using 4mm hook:
1. Ch2. 36 dc around hair elastic. Sl st to first st. (36)
2. Ch2. *Dc. 2Dc.* around. Sl st to first st. (54)
3. Ch2. *Dc. Dc2tog.* around. Sl st to first st. (36)
4. Ch2. Dc2tog around. Sl st to first st. (18)
5. Ch2. Dc2tog around. Sl st to first st. FO. (9)
Close the hole with the remaining length of yarn. Weave in ends. If felting, I prefer to felt by hand, since there is more control over shrinkage. I made a post about felting a while ago, you can find it HERE!
For #5 or #6 yarn:
Secure yarn to hair elastic using a simple knot. Using 6.5mm hook:
1. Ch2. 24 dc around hair elastic. Sl st to first st. (24)
2. Ch2. Sc around. Sl st to first st. (24)
3. Ch2. Dc2tog around. Sl st to first st. (12)
4. Ch1. Hdc2tog around. Sl st to first st. (6)
Close the hole with the remaining length of yarn. Weave in ends. If felting, I prefer to felt by hand, since there is more control over shrinkage. I made a post about felting a while ago, you can find it HERE!
And that’s it! Enjoy your new Bandless Ear Caps!
