Today there’s 6 inches of snow on the ground, and yet I’ve been in a spring mood for a month. So because of that, the Hibiscus Sunhat has been born! This fun sunhat works up quickly, and the lacy flowers add beautiful detail. What’s more, with small tight stitches (think amigurumi), the brim of this sunhat stays up by itself! No need for wire or starch! And, of course, like most things floral, my mother already wants one! So if you’re thinking of making one, you might want to make 2 just in case! 😉

Yarn:
You can use any worsted (#4) yarn. I used about 280 yards of Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in color Lemon.
24/7 Cotton has suddenly become my favorite cotton. Lately I’ve been working up some pillows and small projects like this sunhat, and this yarn is SO versatile! I actually want to try knitting with it next…
Inspiration:
This sunhat began with the hibiscus flowers. I actually first thought of them on a lacy tee (coming later this year!) but I wanted to get the flower stitches worked out properly on something small first. There’s nothing more annoying than having to frog 5 rounds of a tee or a tank, but when it’s just a hat – that’s much quicker! So the first Hibiscus item I have for you all is a beautiful hat!
Construction:
This hat is worked continuously, with no seaming. You start at the center, working in continuous rounds until the lace. The pattern includes picture instruction for the lace, (which my testers have told me is immensely helpful for this!), and then you work the brim in continuous rounds as well. What’s great about this pattern is that the brim provides good sun protection, without the need to keep the brim up with a wire or starch. While it’s true you could make the brim wider if you put a wire in, I’ve found that it keeps its shape well with simple tight stitches.
Supplies:
Any worsted (#4) yarn. I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in color Lemon. (approx. 280 yards)
3.0 mm hook
Pattern written in US terms.
You may want to use a stitch marker to mark the first row of every round.
Gauge: 6 sc and 6 rows is 1” square
Finished measurements: Fits head circumference 20-22” around.
Stitches:
Ch: Chain
Sl st: Slip Stitch
Sc: Single Crochet
Dc: Double Crochet
Tr: Treble Crochet
Tr2tog-clust: treble 2 together cluster stitch.
Crab stitch/ Reverse single crochet
Special Stitches:
Half-Flower: tr2tog-clust, ch3, sc, ch3, tr2tog-clust, ch3, sc, ch3, tr2tog-clust
Flower: [tr2tog-clust, ch3, sc, ch3], repeat [ to ] 4x, tr2tog-clust
